Routine preoperative experience for breast augmentation

The typical experience for a woman considering breast augmentation should be with her doing some research or homework about the breast augmentation procedure, its risks, complications, and potential plastic surgeons. After learning as much as she can or has generated a reasonable list of questions, she should select a qualified plastic surgeon. At a minimum, the plastic surgeon should be board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. It is best to select a plastic surgeon who has at least a few years of experience in practice and a special interest in breast augmentation surgery.

During the breast augmentation consultation, the plastic surgeon should start by answering any initial questions, and then perform a history and physical examination. It is during the physical examination that important anatomical observations should be addressed. The woman physical attributes are the foundation for her result. So it is important to understand the unique anatomy that the candidate possesses. This should allow her to have realistic expectations of her breast augmentation surgery result.

After the plastic surgeon has a good understanding of the woman’s expectations and her anatomy, he will be able to recommend a breast implant size or sizes. The final decision is always the woman’s choice. Having decided on a breast implant size, the consult will turn to the logistics for booking a breast augmentation surgery. Usually more questions will be generated at this point and all will typically be answered before she leaves the office. She will then call to schedule her preoperative appointment and surgery date at her convenience.

Some women come to the breast augmentation consultation with their minds already made up that are going to have the surgery and Dr. Michael J. Brown will be performing the breast implant surgery. When this is the case, they will proceed with their preoperative appointment at the same visit. This is typically the routine with out of town patients.

During the preoperative visit, the before photographs are taken, and the operative consents are signed. The medications to avoid and instruction sheets are reviewed and the prescriptions are given. She may elect to meet with the plastic surgeon again to go over the breast implant size and answer any remaining questions. She will be given directions to the operating facility, be reminded not to eat or drink anything after midnight on the night before her breast augmentation surgery.
